WMVP076(HD) - Damn That River by The Evidence

WMVP076 - Damn That River by The Evidence

Artist: The Evidence
Track: Damn That River
Director: Douglas Thomson

This weeks video is an oft-told tale of female disenfranchisement in the 50s.

Director Douglas Thomson takes this premise and makes it a darkly humorous hyper-real tale. As a 50s housewife struggles against her uncaring husband she fantasises about various ways to kill him. There is a distinct change in grading between the murder fantasies and reality, which highlights the 'golden-age' mentality of this scenario. These sections are inter-cut with The Evidence themselves playing the track dressed in a very clean cut 50s style. It's vaguely reminiscent of the video for In Bloom by Nirvana directed by Kevin Kerslake.

A beautifully shot, beautifully structured piece of film-making.

WMVP075(HD) - Can We Go Wrong by Hesta Prynn

WMVP075 - Can We Go Wrong by Hesta Prynn

Artist: Hesta Prynn
Track: Can We Go Wrong
Director: Randy Scott Slavin

Another stop-motion video using humans this week.

Director Randy Scott Slavin took Hesta Prynn to a park in New York and then took over 13k still photographs to animate together. He makes her 'skate' and float around the park in a really fun way. As well these segments there are also appearances by an old Simon game and a reference to Missile Command.

WMVP074(HD) - The Emancipation by Tricil

WMVP074 - The Emancipation by Tricil

Artist: Tricil
Track: The Emancipation
Directors: Franck Trebillac & Marc Broussely

This weeks video has the feel of a distorted music box.

Dancer and industrial band frontwoman Miss Maleficent Martini takes the role of a ballet dancer in a bizarre old-fashioned surrounding. She is not your typical ballerina and this is not your typical ballet music. Tricil is a dubstep artist and his jagged style of music is matched by the jagged, yet still beautiful, movements of Miss Martini.

Adding to the music box feel, directors Trebillac & Broussely use kaleidoscope type effects to increase the feel of movement on a small scale. These kaleidoscope reflections are reminiscent of videos by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jet, but here they are used perfectly to fit with the style of track.

WMVP073 - The Space In Between by How To Destroy Angels

Artist: How To Destroy Angels
Track: The Space In Between
Director: Rupert Sanders

Because of the nature of independent music, the majority of the videos I play are very low budget. This actually works out well, because one of the primary purposes of this podcast is to promote the idea that you don't need a massive budget to create a good video. All you need is a good idea.

However every now and again a bigger budget video makes the list. I would guess that this is one of the most expensive videos that has appeared on this podcast. It makes sense when you realise that How To Destroy Angels is a side project of Nine Inch Nails.

Director Rupert Sanders creates a disturbing video that utilises both CGI and real fire. It is also a disturbing visual with plenty of blood and death. It's almost to the level that I might classify it as NSFW.

High production values and a dark tone make this a great video.

In a moment of housekeeping I am contemplating releasing a large format, HD version of this show. Large enough to be comfortably played on iPads and other tablets. I'd be interested to know if people would be interested in this.

WMVP072 - Automatic by Everything Is Made In China

Artist: Everything Is Made In China
Track: Automatic
Director: Ilya Kolesnikov

After a brief break during which I've updated my video editing software and finally bought myself a domain name for this show, I'm back with a rather simple and beautiful video.

Russian band Everything Is Made In China got their Friend Ilya Kolesnikov to direct a video for this low-key track and he decided to film a bed. Written down it's an odd concept, but throughout the video we see the development of a relationship. Despite the concept Kolesnikov manages to avoid the obvious pornographic moments and instead shows this bed and the bedroom as a place where this couple simply be together.

A well edited, dreamlike video.
